Course Description
This course requires the Participant to read and understand the attached handbook designed to introduce and/or reinforce communication skills essential in caring for older patients and their families. The handbook offers practical techniques and approaches to help with diagnosis, promote treatment adherence, make more efficient use of clinicians’ time, and increase patient and provider satisfaction.
In Talking With Your Older Patient: A Clinician’s Handbook, Participants will consider health care perceptions common among older people. Next, Participants will learn how to respectfully and effectively communicate with older people. Additionally, Participants will explore different interviewing techniques helpful with various needs of older patients. Also, Participants will identify the benefits of regular exercise and good nutrition for older patients. Next, Participants will learn techniques for approaching sensitive subjects with older patients and will be provided with resources for more information and support. Additionally, Participants will explore ways to educate patients and families and connect them with community resources and services. Also, Patients will become familiar with strategies for delivering bad news to older patients. Next, Participants will understand how to tailor questions and treatment plans to meet diverse patients’ needs. Additionally, Participants will consider how to communicate effectively with families and caregivers. Finally, Participants will learn how to talk with patients and caregivers about a diagnosis.

Course Requirements
You will be expected to review all materials provided and pass the post-test with a minimum of 80%, in order to receive your certificate of completion. You will also be required to complete a course evaluation. Once you have satisfactorily completed the post-test and submitted your evaluation, you will be able to download your certificate.
