Course Description

This course requires the Participant to read and understand the attached article pertaining to neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) refers to a constellation of signs in the newborn due to substance or medication withdrawal. The Participant will understand how and why opioid use and dependence during pregnancy continues to be a significant health problem. Additionally, Participants will consider the guidelines for management of opioid-exposed newborns at Vermont Children’s Hospital at Fletcher Allen Health Care.

In Management of Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal, Participants will gain general knowledge about how opioid use and dependence during pregnancy gravely affects the developing fetus. Participants will also explore the guidelines for management of opioid-exposed newborns at Vermont Children’s Hospital at Fletcher Allen Health Care.

This course is designed to provide comprehensive information for the management of the opioid exposed newborn to mental health professionals, social workers, substance abuse professionals, child welfare workers, healthcare professionals, psychologists, or certified addiction specialists.

Course Learning Objectives

  • To be aware of the significant public health problem that opioid use and dependence during pregnancy poses.
  • To comprehend the effects of opioid use and withdrawal on the developing fetus.
  • To identify the appropriate site of care for opioid-exposed newborns
  • To understand neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) scoring
  • To be familiar with the treatment techniques and how they are effective
  • To identify when different types of newborn drug screening should be considered
  • To recognize when breastfeeding is recommended for all infants
  • To be aware of the guidelines for the management of infants born to hepatitis C antibody positive women
  • To recognize the importance of discharge considerations for infants on oral methadone
  • To be familiar with outpatient management of neonatal opioid withdrawal and monthly multidisciplinary meetings

 

Course Requirements

You will be expected to review all materials provided and pass the post-test with a minimum of 80%, in order to receive your certificate of completion. You will also be required to complete a course evaluation. Once you have satisfactorily completed the post-test and submitted your evaluation, you will be able to download your certificate.
