Course Description
The loss of cognitive functioning, which may involve degeneration in the ability to think, remember, or reason, can obstruct one’s ability to successfully accomplish daily activities and tasks. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders “NINDs” and Stroke and the National Institute on Aging “NIHs” aim to educate people about this medical condition through exploration of the varying types and stages of dementia, as well as patients’ evolution through diagnoses and treatments.
Firstly, participants will learn the basics of dementia and cognitive impairment, in order to distinguish each of the classifications of mild cognitive impairment. Once they have been introduced to the neuropathology of neurodegenerative disorders, various types of reversible dementia-like disorders and conditions, and the risk factors for dementia and vascular cognitive impairment, they will be walked through the process of obtaining a diagnosis. They will then analyze treatment options for each disorder, as well as learning how to reference and comprehend research studies that can aid those in the field in discerning what options are most appropriate for each individual patient.
This course is intended to familiarize mental health professionals, social workers, substance abuse professionals, child welfare workers, healthcare professionals, psychologists, or certified addiction specialists, with the NINDs and NIHs methodology in diagnosing and treating dementia-related disorders.
Course Learning Objectives
- To identify causes and symptoms of mild cognitive impairment
- To understand vascular disease’s role in the genesis of dementia
- To distinguish the circumstances surrounding Lewy body dementia and those surrounding Alzheimer’s disease
- To understand how changes in protein contribute to cognitive impairment and dementia
- To identify the range of tests that can be performed for a diagnosis
- To be familiar with the array of treatment options that can be paired with methods of managing dementia
- To be aware of dementia-related terminology, resources and references
Course Requirements
You will be expected to review all materials provided and pass the post-test with a minimum of 80%, in order to receive your certificate of completion. You will also be required to complete a course evaluation. Once you have satisfactorily completed the post-test and submitted your evaluation, you will be able to download your certificate.
