Course Description
This course requires the Participant to read and understand the attached article pertaining to chronic child neglect. Although there is no universal definition, chronic neglect can be defined as a parent or caregiver’s ongoing, serious pattern of deprivation of a child’s basic physical, developmental and/or emotional needs for healthy growth and development. As compared to children who are in imminent danger or who experience egregious harm at the hands of their parents or caregivers, chronic child neglect is more pervasive, less visible and more difficult to remedy.
In Chronic Child Neglect, Participants will become familiar with the concept of chronic neglect. Next, Participants will consider the scope of the problem. Additionally, Participants will learn about family qualities that are associated with chronic neglect. Also, Participants will assess the impact that chronic neglect has on children and society. Next, Participants will examine treatment endeavors unique to assisting families plagued with chronic neglect. Additionally, Participants will become familiar with chronic neglect casework intake; engagement; assessment; case planning and intervention; and case closure and beyond. Also, Participants will explore the competencies and responsibilities of caseworkers and supervisors specializing in chronic neglect and will also look at significant aspects of specialized training. Next, Participants will consider a framework for addressing chronicity and will also look at integrated approaches along the child welfare continuum. Finally, Participants will conclude by learning about two examples of promising interventions and evidence-informed programs: Minnesota and the Family Asset Builder and Missouri and the Chronic Neglect Worker.
This course is intended to provide child welfare professionals, mental health professionals and social workers with an overview of chronic child neglect.
