Course Description
This course requires the Participant to read and understand the attached article pertaining to child neglect. In the United States, child neglect accounts for 78 percent of child maltreatment cases and is more prevalent than both physical and sexual abuse. Despite the magnitude of this problem, child neglect has historically received the least attention from practitioners, researchers and the media.
In Acts of Omission: An Overview of Child Neglect, Participants will first consider the scope of the problem. Next, Participants will learn about basic definitions of child abuse and neglect provided by federal and state law. Additionally, Participants will explore the most commonly recognized categories of neglect. Also, Participants will analyze the consequences of child neglect—including the relationship between trauma and neglect and fatal neglect. Next, Participants will examine environmental, family, parent and child risk factors for neglect. Additionally, Participants will become familiar with closely related issues—i.e. poverty, substance abuse, domestic violence and educational neglect. Also, Participants will consider fundamental principles regarding investigation, assessment, prevention and intervention of child neglect. Finally, Participants will examine the different strategies involved with training on child neglect.
